Description

Product Description

Birm is a relatively inexpensive material which can be used for iron and manganese removal by catalytic oxidation. It requires a pH of 7 or more for iron removal and pH 8 for manganese removal. It is advised not to use Birm in combination with chlorination and the water should be free of oil and hydrogen sulphide. If the pH of the water is too low pH correction maybe required. Birm is a light, inexpensive media but often doesn't last quite as long as other natural media.

Iron Removal Criteria
pH: 7 - 8.5 ( High pH conditions may cause the formulation of colloidal iron which is very difficult to filter out)
Alkalinity: greater than twice the combined sulphate and chloride
Organic matter: <4-5 ppm
Dissolved oxygen: at least 15% of the iron or manganese content less than 0.5% chlorine, no H2S, oil or polyphosphates
Max. Temperature 38C

Manganese Removal Criteria
pH: 8-9
Alkalinity: greater than twice the combined sulphate and chloride
Organic matter: <4-5 ppm
Dissolved oxygen: at least 15% of the iron or manganese content less than 0.5% chlorine, no H2S, oil or polyphosphates
Max. Temperature 38C

Media life expectancy is 2 to 3 years.

This Birm unit is supplied partially assembled for shipping. Some assembly will be required.
